ISIL foreign fighters a threat to world, MFA tells Security Council

Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs, addressing the United Nations (UN) Security Council meeting at its 69th General Assembly in New York Thursday, said that the so-called Islamic state ISIL is a “serious threat not just to the people of Iraq and Syria, but to the entire international community.”

“The issue of foreign fighters is becoming ever more complicated, in light of their ability to move from one zone of the conflict to another, as they become professional mercenaries. It’s important to understand that these combatants are not fighting for peace, they are fostering further development of conflict,” Rinkēvičs said.

Latvia’s chief diplomat went on to say that these foreign fighters have also created a threat to his country’s national security. Latvia is working actively to prevent any possible recruiting of foreign fighters in its territory, or any involvement of state residents in armed conflicts abroad, or the offering of other forms of support to terrorists.

Here are a selection of Rinkēvičs' official English-language tweets from New York remarking on other items from the diplomatic agenda there:
