According to Imants Parādnieks (National Alliance) of the Saeima Committee on Budget and Finances, the goal of the planned revisions is to balance the tax burden. While business organizations are against tax changes, stressing like many have before that they want to see a foreseeable tax policy in Latvia.
However PM Māris Kučinskis says that businesses won't be affected by the proposed changes.
"One of the things that might worry businesses is the solidarity tax that was introduced more than a year ago and which we won't lift at the moment as there's no alternative.
As for the remaining taxes, we have discussed it a lot and we aren't going to raise practically no single tax. As concerns other taxes [..] we are reviewing the road maintenance tax. Perhaps it was too fast to move towards protecting the environment rather than continuing as we're used to.
At any case, there's a dialogue going on between us and I'm hoping for understanding, as opposed to requesting lower and lower taxes at a time when the government has to cover expenses on healthcare, education and all the rest," he said.
