Hockey club to get refill from friends in gas

Latvian ice hockey club Riga Dinamo has found sponsors in the gas sector, club chairman Juris Savickis told national information agency LETA Tuesday.

“We’ll put a special plan in place to get the needed funding,” the gas mogul said of the official deal cut with the gas business firms.

“We’re also in talks with players right now,” the long-standing national hockey patron and former Soviet intelligence officer told LETA, promising a clearer view of the potential roster in a week’s time.

Savickis offered no news on progress in the KHL league team’s search for a new head coach, however.

On Monday Savickis announced the sealing of a sponsorship agreement with unnamed firms to secure the survival of the Dinamo club.

“Everything’s going to be fine. We get the papers signed today and money transferred into accounts tomorrow. We should have the roster ready in a week and we’re working on contracts for coaches and players,” he told the Latvijas avize news portal.

Latvijas avize portal also reported that Kari Heikilla, a veteran of the sport, would be guiding the team in place of outgoing coach Artis Abols, who is switching over to the staff of the KHL’s Toljatti Lada team.
