‘Fixed’ cash registers remain at many retail food chains

Take note – story published 9 years ago

Public food service companies owning a host of restaurant chains popular at shopping malls are still unlawfully using malware-based cash registers despite a law enforcement operation that netted a tax-evasion scheme at the Gan Bei oriental eatery at the end of 2014, State Revenue Service (VID) Deputy Crimefighting Director Kaspars Cernickis told newswire BNS Thursday.

Sweeps and raids at nine unnamed Riga establishments have turned up widespread use of the “manipulated cash registers”, he said, adding that the violators had only tried to mask their activities deeper.

Targeting enterprises with larger turnovers in January, the tax authority’s inspectors were surprised to see ongoing evasion mechanisms installed and operating after the Gan Bei case had been given such widespread publicity.

SRS head Ināra Pētersone suggested tough punishments, possibly shut-downs of the companies involved, may be called for due to the scale of the fraud.
