Bakers eye massive Chinese market

Take note – story published 9 years ago

Disappearance of Russian market is forcing bakers to seek markets further afield.

Latvian bakers have also been showing interest in shipping their products to China, Karlis Zemess, board chairman of the Latvian Bakers Association, told the BNS newswire Monday.

"[Bread producers] have shown interest in export opportunities in China," Zemess said, adding that only products with long shelf-life, such as frozen products or snacks, could be shipped to China due to the length of time it takes to transport goods there.

Until now, eastern neighbor countries like Russia had been attractive to Latvian bakers, but the current political and economic situation there has forced change of thinking.

"The market used to look fairly promising earlier, but now I suppose things are not going to change there in the short-term, so it is necessary to look for other markets," Zemess said.

Latvian entrepreneurs are looking for alternative sales markets after Russia imposed a food import ban in response to Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis.

China is regarded as one of the most promising markets, with several Latvian dairy companies about to start shipping their products to the Asian superpower.
