Take note – story published 7 years ago

Around 150 troops and an impressive array of military hardware arrived in Latvia from Slovakia April 5 in the latest reinforcement of NATO's eastern flank.

Latvia's National Armed Forces (NBS) posted a gallery of images showing the Slovakian contingent arriving by rail.

However, the official welcoming ceremony for the Slovakians will take place April 7 at the Adazi military base near Riga.

Vehicles arriving in Latvia from Slovakia include the BVP-2 fighting vehicles of the 13th mechanized battalion Levice.

The sending of forces from the Visegrad countries (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland) to the Baltic states was one of the measures agreed at the NATO Summit in Warsaw, with the Visegrad countries taking it in turns to send forces on 3-month rotations.

From January to March this year, Czech armed forces were in Lithuania, and in the third quarter of the year Hungarian forces will go to Estonia with Polish forces moving to Lithuania in the fourth quarter of 2017.

During their stay the Slovakian Armed Forces will participate in several training exercises including "Summer Shield XIV" and "Saber Strike 2017".
