Liepāja to host military base with NATO-standard docks

The Liepāja port city in Latvia's west will host a military base including docks compliant with NATO ships, Defense Ministry State Secretary Jānis Garisons told LETA Wednesday, reported LSM.

The base will be located at the Karosta area in Liepāja.

"Our goal is to consolidate all military infrastructure in one place. It's a lengthy project that will require huge sums of money, but funding is so-so at the moment. After ten years docking terminals could be built, including for NATO ships," said Garisons.

He specified that the base will be under control of the National Armed Forces (NBS) rather than NATO but its infrastructure will be compliant with ships of the military alliance.

The two-stage construction of the new military base will entail both building infrastructure to host NBS units as well as constructing NATO-standard docking terminals.
