Border Watch: Russian subs in the area

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Latvia's National Armed Forces (NBS) April 17 continued their updates on the Russian military presence near national borders with information about submarine activity.

At a distance of 5.5 nautical miles from Latvia's territorial waters (10 km) two Kilo-class Russian navy submarines had been detected on April 16, the NBS said.

A few seconds later, the NBS added that a bit further out (20 nautical miles from the border) a Kashtan-class submarine support vessel with registration mark SS-750 had also been spotted on April 16. The SS-750 is the sub support and rescue vessel for the Baltic Sea and is believed to be equipped with a deep-submergence rescue vehicle (DSRV).

It is by no means the first time these vessels have been spotted taking up similar positions.

Meanwhile on April 17 the Russian military released footage of the test-firing of surface-to-surface missiles from its ships in the Baltic Sea.

It has been a busy week for coastal patrols who also sprang into action alongside Swedish colleagues to try to locate a man who fell overboard from a fishing vessel who, sadly, is believed lost at sea.
