'White Night' a big hit

The Europe-wide contemporary arts event known as "White Night" ("Balta nakts" in Latvian) was held Saturday night and organizers are claiming large crowds at the various select venues in Riga totaling 40,000 - around the same as in previous years.

PR director Linda Vitola-Baranova said that lines formed at venues in Old Town, and that the most popular attraction was on Dome Square - the show provided by the "Dundu" puppet troupe from Stuttgart.

The crowd on the square was reportedly enchanted by giant white silhouette figures cast all around.

The musical entertainment and short subject films provided by the so-called annual "festival for adventurous music and related arts" known as "Skanu mezs" in Old Town's Anglican Church, were also well attended.

Also popular was the special program offered by the contemporary arts festival "Survival K(n)it 7", Vitola-Baranova reported.
