Three for the Weekend: The music of words

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Words and music galore in this weekend's things to do in Latvia.

Music

Several Latvian bands you might enjoy hearing are performing on the weekend.

The alt-rock band "Aurora" is holding a concert at the Ģertrūdes ielas Theater.

The band, enjoying a sort of a cult status in Latvia, still haven't released an album though they're celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. (To be fair, they had a hiatus from 1992 to 2014.)

Tickets are at a modest €7.

While the Leningrad cafe will on June 8 host stately Gatis Ziema un Karaliskā Dekadence (Gatis Ziema and the Royal Decadence) whose arrangements will surprise and take you to places you seldom believed existed.

Words

The Blood of a Poet festival in Rīga will feature readings of contemporary poetry from Latvia and abroad, interspersed with lectures, film screenings and performance art.

To enjoy the festival to the fullest you should know Latvian and Russian, however some performances should be enjoyable to international guests as well, especially on June 5 at 9.30 p.m. when the Kaņepes Culture Center in central Rīga will lit up with video performances of international artists.

Entry is free.

Dancing at Limbaži

While the coastal Limbaži town will feature music and lights and lakeside dancing in the "Dancing Night" what promises to be the largest event at the municipality since long ago, featuring 1,500 dancers from across Latvia in a peaceful scenario that'll unfold by the scenic Lielezers lake.
