Three for the Weekend: Sculpture, jazz and cinema

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Here are three things to do on the weekend in Latvia. They're related to the art of attaching form to stone; musical harmony to the madness within; and of sequencing images to make semblances of life. (I should probably stop trying to be poetic.)

World Jazz Festival (Rīga)

On July 29 the World Jazz Festival will conclude with a concert at Arēna Rīga at 7 p.m., featuring smooth jazz legend, Grammy-winning pianist Bob James and acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Hugh Masekela.

A few tickets are still available.

RojaL film festival (Roja)

The seaside town of Roja is screening movies! Animated ones, short ones, and regular ones too.

And they're also hosting an award - the golden RojaL with a large 'L' - for up-and-coming Baltic and Polish filmmakers. Come see this... thing... with animation... held July 28 to July 30... with awards too.

Summer Sound (Liepāja)

An even by all means smaller than Positivus, the Summer Sound music festival still attracts a solid crowd of visitors and musicians each year, with acts like King Charles, Lost Frequencies and Milky Chance sure to make your stay at the port city of Liepāja a nice one.

And, if you've been meaning to get familiar with Latvian music, Summer Sound will have numerous Latvian artists all in one place--go see KASETES, Ezeri and Rīgas Modes, if you want to hear something fresh and exciting; or Carnival Youth if you haven't heard them abroad yet.

The festival is held from July 29 to July 30.
