Three for the Weekend: Musically sound advent

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Music and other things are what's happening in Rīga prior to the advent.

Friday - Beethoven and Pyotr Tchaikovsky in Old Rīga

The Sinfonietta Rīga will perform, lead by conductor Ariel Zuckermann and joined by cellist Alexey Stadler at the Lielā ģilde hall in Old Rīga for what promises to be a delightful Friday evening.

A special treat is offered in Qigang Chen, L’Eloignement, which melds Shostakovich with traditional Chinese melodies.

There are but a few tickets left.

Saturday - Indie music in central Rīga

Carnival Youth, one of Latvia's few musical exports outside academic music, is playing at the Palladium concert hall in Rīga on Saturday at 8 p.m. Afterwards, they'll be going on tour to Belgium and Eastern Europe.

Here's a video of the strapping young lads playing at the Latvian Television studio.

Sunday - Venite, adoremus!

Sunday marks the first advent, in which Christmas trees are lit in some towns of Latvia alongside Advent crowns. Should you happen to be in the capital, the Christmas tree will be lit at the Doma Square at 5 p.m., followed by songs and merrymaking.

Christmas markets will open on Sunday with squares across Old Rīga luring people with mulled wine and Christmas things, a perfect a place as any to pick up a souvenir from Latvia.
