Three for the Weekend: Movies, music, modern art

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Movies, music and art make up this weekend's majestic trio of things to do in foliage-dropping Latvia.

Pearls of world cinema

The Baltic Pearl film festival is taking place this week with more than twenty movies from across the world showing on Rīga's silver screens.

Here's an overview of the festival with movie critic Daira Āboliņa singling out must-see films of the festival.

Mozart, Schubert and something entirely new

The state chamber orchestra Sinfonietta Rīga starts off the new concert season with a rendition of Mozart, Schubert and Kristaps Pētersons' Learning Acoustics at the Lielā ģilde concert hall.

Here's a video of the orchestra's art director Normunds Šnē sitting by an apple basket and relating what the arrival of fall and the new concert season of the orchestra means to him.

Tickets have been sold out but Latvian Radio 3 will stream the concert Friday at 7 p.m.

A chance for survival?

The contemporary art festival Survival Kit is set to conclude this weekend with Saturday's "All is Whole" symposium featuring guest artists' lectures (some of them in Latvian, sorry!) wrapping up the festival that set the historic C.C. von Stritzky’s villa abuzz with modern art performances, workshops and films starting September 8.

The symposium aims to explore "the entanglements between art and esoteric practices, occultism and acupuncture, geometry and politics, fauna and the end of the world, as well as many more, to the fore to open up our thinking about the history and present day of art."

Here's the program and here's the Facebook event
