Photos: Liepāja then and now

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Liepāja is Latvia's third-largest city and an ice-free port, and it's celebrating its 392th birthday on March 18. For the occasion, an exhibition of 23 photos at the Liepāja Central Science Library puts the city's historical look side by side with the way it looks today.

Photographer Igors Bobrovs used old postcards of Liepāja and took photos of the same place again, merging them together.

In an interview with Rus.lsm.lv, Bobrovs describes the process as having required a lot of trial and error. With the pictures, he says, he tried to help the soul of the city he seems to love very much.

"I think that with these photos I somehow helped the city and its soul. Perhaps I'll be rewarded afterwards. But even if not, I hope that the soul of our Liepāja likes the photos. There's something else, too - I very much enjoy sharing the good that I have. Perhaps others will enjoy it too, perhaps they will gain something positive from it," the photographer says.
