One woman, many angles - more than just being naked

Take note – story published 8 years ago

The Happy Art Museum, located on the 7th floor of Galleria Riga, has opened an exhibition, called L by the photographer Olivier De Rycke, reported Andrey Shavrei (Андрей Шаврей) from LSM's Russian-language service. The exhibition takes place from October 29 until November 8.

The pictures all show a single girl - Laima Irbis. She's from Russia, while the photographer is, as his name would suggest, French. Both are currently living in Latvia.

"Olivier is the first photographer whom I met after moving here," Laima told Rus.lsm.lv. "It turned out we are living on neighboring streets, which facilitated my visits to his house. We took great portraits then. Last year we also met by chance at an exhibition in Jūrmala, and I told him about my idea to create an exhibition. It turned out that Olivier had also entertained the idea about a project of his own. With luck, our interests were aligned," she said.

The exhibition, titled L, is a word play on the French elle (her) with two L's. Besides, L is also the first letter in the name of the protagonist of the pictures.

"I call this style nude portrait," said Laima. "It's more than just being naked. Rather, it's sheer nakedness.

These works reveal many different states and stories. They are so different, that even I couldn't sometimes recognize myself. I can proudly say that we arrived at difficult, interesting works. The young and very talented stylist Līva Dresere put in a lot of work in these pictures. She made up and elaborated all of the presented images. And, what's pleasing and funny at the same time, even my closest friends come up to me and ask in which photos can they find me. I'm in all of them!"
