Discussions begin to plan new Riga concert hall

Early-stage discussions took place Tuesday over a plan to construct a new concert venue in Riga by 2030.

The talks at Riga City Council are a first step on the road towards opening a new venue, reported Latvian Radio.

Riga city architect Gvido Princis said: "There are lots of different discussions necessary for this project - what sort of hall should it be, with what sort of parameters for musicians, the audience, industry, business, and should it be local or international in scale? These questions are all relevant to the discussion."

Interested parties including architects, civil engineers, planners, music industry representatives and others are all being asked for input to ensure that as and when a concrete proposal is drawn up, it meets the needs of those who could be expected to make use of it.

There are already three main potential concert venue ideas with proponents of each arguing their cases.

Latvia's regions have in recent years opened several acclaimed new concert venues in Liepaja, Rezekne and Cesis, which has caused Rigans - used to a near-monopoly on cultural events - to consider whether they might need a new venue of their own.
