Languages including Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian will be taught at the new center, as well as studies of Baltic culture and traditions.
The ambassadors of all three Baltic states attended the opening ceremony along with local Indian dignitaries, as well as pro-rector of the University of Latvia, Ina Druviete.
Latvian Ambassador to India Aivars Groza mentioned the oft-noted parallels between Latvian and Sanskrit, the ancient language of te Indian subcontinent as well as parallels between the Baltic and Indian traditions of non-violent resistance to foreign domination.
And with around 1,000 students from India expected to study in Latvia this year, educational ties between the countries are also strong - plus the University of Latvia already has an Indian study center.
The new Baltic cultural and study center in India has its own building containing an office, three classrooms and a library. The center will also be the workplace of University of Latvia professor Sigma Ankrava.
