Annual architecture prize nominees named

On April 11 eighteen nominees of the annual architecture prize were named, the Latvian Association of Architects told the press.

The winners, to be picked by an international jury, will be named on May 19.

The nominees include reconstruction projects, residential houses as well as cultural buildings and more.

"The applicants to the Annual Latvian Architecture Award illustrate the landscape of Latvian architecture well. As always the private projects are convincing, but what's happening with the municipal ones with a lot of investment and impressive use of public and EU funds?" mused Mārtiņš Jaunromāns, chairman of the national jury.

The nominees

Among the nominees is the remarkable Shaolin Flying Monks Theatre resting on a slope covered in cypress trees on Songshan Mountain in China.

Designed by Mailītis Architects, it features a wind tunnel allowing monks to levitate.

The second cultural object is the Exupery International School in Riga.

The entrants include private properties as well.

The Riga Architecture Week, to be held May 15 to May 19 within the bounds of the annual award, will feature film screenings and lectures by architecture professionals, as well as showcase the recent achievements in Latvian architecture.
